Wellness in the Schools went to a small farm call Little River Cooperative in south Miami on the recommendation of Key Biscayne’s garden expert, Jackie Kellogg. It was really nice, and they had a great tomato plant set up that may be adopted for Key Biscayne.
In order to get more students involved in the gardens, we are hoping to have classes sign up to come to the garden on Friday mornings for short lessons. We are also looking at some curriculum as well as guest teachers (knowledgeable in gardening, health, slow food, etc.).
We started the garden signs with fact sheets for the different fruits and vegetables we are growing. They give an overview on what nutrients can be found in the item growing, suggestions on how to eat it, and the plant date/harvest area. We also set up the “chalkboard” wall where lessons and watering information will be posted and easily adjusted.
